Points of View Tutorial

We created this multimedia project as a requirement for our IDT 650 class during Fall 2013.

The tutorial teaches students to use the EBSCOhost Points of View Module, which is one of the databases available via the West Virginia Info Depot. West Virginia Info Depot is the Web portal for the West Virginia Library Commission databases, which are available to all West Virginians through their public, school, high school, and college or university libraries.

This tutorial is aimed at high school students (11th grade) working on an English research paper about a current social issue. The tutorial consists of five modules and leads the students through the process of choosing a research strategy, choosing a database, searching for sources in various formats, evaluating the sources, and then citing the sources to create a bibliography to be used to write a paper. The modules consist of narrated slide presentations with links to screencasts. It can be used by students working independently or by teachers with their English classes.

Module 1: Introduction: Google vs. Points of View

Module 2: Locating Trustworthy Information

Module 3: Choosing a Database and Searching

Module 4: Evaluating and Citing Sources

Module 5: Now It's Your Turn: What's Next?

Getting Help

Technical Concerns

1. When we designed the tutorial, it worked well with Chrome, Firefox, and Safari and all the links opened in a new tab or a new window. It did not work well with MS Internet Explorer. As each browser is updated, conflicts may occur. We have created a link list and placed it in the Frequently Asked Question (FAQ) page to help people work around browser issues.

2. When we uploaded our presentations to BrainShark to add the narration, the format of a couple of slides went "wonky." The slides look perfect in both PowerPoint and in Google Presentations. They even look good when we go into BrainShark to edit the narration. It seems to be a glitch in the system and we apologize.

If you find additional issues, please let us know via our FAQ form or e-mail.
